TarraWarra Museum of Art

A retreat for the imagination

Set on Wurundjeri Country in the Yarra Valley, TarraWarra Museum of Art offers a considered encounter with modern and contemporary Australian art in an extraordinary natural setting.

Since opening in 2003, the museum has presented a dynamic program of exhibitions that champion both emerging and established artists. Its collection of more than 600 works was gifted to the nation by philanthropists Eva Besen AO and Marc Besen AC, whose vision helped shape the development of modern art in Australia.

Two architecturally distinct buildings define the experience. The award winning gallery designed by Allan Powell showcases rotating exhibitions curated to inspire curiosity. The Eva and Marc Besen Centre, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, offers visible art storage alongside learning and performance spaces, inviting visitors behind the scenes of a working collection.

Outside, sculptures and installations are positioned within the landscape, including Valhalla by Callum Morton, first created for the Venice Biennale. The surrounding hills and vineyard vistas frame the museum with a quiet sense of arrival that feels both expansive and intimate.

Art, architecture and country

TarraWarra Museum of Art brings together art, architecture and landscape in a way that feels immersive rather than formal. Visitors can explore iconic works, contemporary perspectives and First Nations culture within a setting that changes subtly with the seasons.

It is a place to slow down, observe and reflect, where creativity and environment feel inseparable.
