Autumn in Marysville
Golden leaves, quiet walks and slower days in the ranges
Autumn in the High Country brings a slower pace, cooler air and landscapes that shift into deep reds, burnt orange and gold. Just 90 minutes from Melbourne, it’s an easy seasonal escape where you can spend more time outside without needing to plan too far ahead.
Autumn here is easy to settle into. You can head out for a walk, stop for lunch, take a short drive, then be back to your room at Peppers Marysville without the day ever feeling rushed.
Where the colours are at their best
Start with the avenue of golden poplars along Buxton to Marysville Road (approx. 10 minutes drive from Peppers Marysville). In autumn, this stretch becomes one of the most photographed spots in the region, with leaves forming a canopy of colour overhead. It’s an easy stop on arrival or a quick outing between other plans.
From there, continue into the surrounding forest drives and walking trails. Lady Talbot Drive (approx. 15–20 minutes) is particularly strong in autumn, with access to short walks like The Beeches and Taggerty Cascades, where fallen leaves line the forest floor and the air feels noticeably cooler.
For something closer to town, the Michaeldene Trail and Wilks Creek Trail offer gentle, shorter walks that can be done at your own pace, making them ideal for a late morning or early afternoon reset.
Simple plans, close together
One of the advantages of staying in Marysville is how easily the day comes together.
Start slow with breakfast at Andiamo Restaurant & Bar or embark on a short drive to Healesville (approx. 30 minutes) for a delicious café stop. From there, return to Marysville and choose one or two experiences rather than trying to do everything.
Spend the late morning walking one of the forest trails or exploring Bruno’s Art and Sculpture Garden (approx. 5 minutes), where sculptures are set among trees that shift colour through the season.
In the afternoon, visit the Marysville & District Historical Society or the Black Saturday Photographic Exhibition at the Visitor Information Centre for something more reflective, or stay outdoors with a picnic at Gallipoli Park.
As the light starts to change, head to Steavenson Falls (approx. 5 minutes). Visiting at dusk, when the falls are floodlit, offers a completely different perspective and is one of the quieter highlights of the region.
Local stops within easy reach
For something a little different, Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm (approx. 10 minutes) offers a hands on experience where you can catch your own fish or simply pick up fresh produce to take away.
If you feel like extending the afternoon, nearby stops like the Buxton Hotel (10 minutes) or Black Spur Inn, Narbethong (20 minutes) provide an easy place to pause for a drink before heading back to Marysville.
For a different kind of experience,Healesville Sanctuary (approx. 30 minutes) offers the chance to see native Australian wildlife in a natural bush setting. It’s especially enjoyable in autumn, when the cooler weather makes it comfortable to explore the grounds.
A festive layer to your stay
If you’re visiting Marysville during the Easter school holidays, many of these experiences can be paired with nearby Easter events across the Yarra Valley, from chocolate hunts to family friendly activities.

A different way to experience autumn
Autumn in Marysville is not about ticking off attractions. It’s about choosing a few things that sit close together and allowing the rest of the day to unfold naturally.
Walk in the morning, stop for lunch, take a short drive, then return before the temperature drops. The kind of rhythm that feels easy to maintain over a weekend or longer stay.
